Abstract

The regional distribution and relative frequency of neurotensin-immunoreactive cells in the alimentary tract of the red-eared slider, Trachemys scripts elegans, were investigated by immunohistochemical method using polyclonal neurotensin antiserum. Samples were taken from esophagus, fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and large intestine. Neurotensin-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in the duodenum, jejunum, ileum and rectum with rare frequencies. They were spherical to spindle shaped (open-type) and located in the basal portion of the surface epithelium of the small and large intestine.
However, the exact function of the neurotensin in the digestive tract of the red-eared slider was unknown. In future, the exact function and significance of appearance of the neurotensin in the digestive tract of the red-eared slider were must be studied with pharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic study about neurotensin.
